Haggins strike puts Town back on track
Soccer: St Kevin's Boys 1 Drogheda Town 2
Four points in as many days from two games over the past week boosted Drogheda Town's league position and they're now back up to third in LSL Major Division table.
Sam Reilly's goal at home to St Francis last Monday secured a 1-1 draw against a side who had put eight goals past the Boynesiders in the reverse fixture, and then it was off to the capital to play St Kevin's Boys on Friday night.
Robbie Horgan's team began the game well and took the lead when Dale Harding took off down the right flank before feeding the ball inside to Emmanuel Santos. The striker showed good awareness to pick out the run of Reilly who arrived late from midfield to apply a sweet finish for his second goal in successive games.
After the break Town should have put the game to bed as they carved out a large number of further scoring opportunities, mainly from set pieces, but the second goal just wouldn't come and the Boynesiders were then stunned by a St Kevin's equaliser.
A fine strike from a counter-attack restored parity going into the final quarter, and in the latter stages both teams went hard in search of a winner. Thankfully for Horgan, it was his team who came up with the all-important goal as Dean Haggins made a fine run from midfield, went one-on-one with the St Kevin's keeper and calmly rolled the ball past him for 2-1.
Town, who began the day on the same number of points as their hosts, complete a tough run of games with a home fixture against leaders Kilbarrack next Monday, probably in DIFE at 7.45pm.
