Faltering Ardee see promotion hopes shattered

Ardee Celtic failed to secure the win they needed to keep their promotion hopes alive at the Junction on Sunday as Dromin secured a play-off that could see them return to the Premier Division next season.

The Deesiders' defeat to Abbey four days earlier meant that Dromin only required a draw and after a goal-less first half a mistake by Ardee netminder Niall Carrie handed the home side the lead as he let the ball slip from his grasp following a set-piece.

The away side kept up the pressure and went close to levelling when Robbie Reynolds had a shot saved by the Dromin netminder, but Dromin eventually doubled their advantage from a corner as their player was afforded a free header which beat Carrie.

Five minutes from time Ardee pulled a goal back from an exquisitely struck free kick and the woodwork came to Dromin's rescue twice at the death as Robbie Reynolds and Darren McMullan were denied.
