Slane finalists Sally Inn were left to reflect on missed opportunities as hot favourites Lantern Bar prevailed in this hard-fought Tom Grimes Cup decider held in Watters of Collon.

The Navan outfit had won the Premier Division league crown the week before but had to battle hard to complete a notable double against a gallant and slightly unlucky Sally Inn team,

Sally got off to a good start, winning the team 1001 game, but poor finishing let them down as the more experienced Lantern side mopped up a couple of doubles games to take a 3-2 lead.

A good win for Ronal Barron in the first singles made it 3-3, before Stephen Lyness and Stuart Lanney put Lantern back in control at 5-3.

Pat McGowan then outpointed Richie Timmons to reduced the deficit back to one and anything seemed possible given the best-of-one cup format, but alas for Sally it was not to be not to be as Ryan Lanney and Stephen Andrews wrapped up a 7-4 victory.

Both their opponents, Mark Heavey and Niall Yorke, passed up a number of chances to win those legs on the doubles, and ultimately this was a show of force from Lantern who still had League Singles champion Mark Clinton in reserve, available to throw if required.

The Fosters Duleek & District League would like to thank the staff and management in Watters for their help in hosting this final, and to the resident DJ. A very good night was had by all involved.

This was the last final of the season and the last tribute of the year to former League chairman Kevin Campbell, who passed away prior to the season starting. RIP.
