Local pair's gold in Belfast

Martial arts

It was a busy weekend for local karate as students made the journey up to Belfast and picked up a couple of gold medals at the North v South Open Championships held at the Royal Academical Institution.

Tenure native Lily Sheeran, who competes for IKKU Navan, went into Saturday's competition on the back of a victory at the JKS Open Kumite in DCU the week before, and once again the medal colour was gold as she overcame three Scottish opponents 8-0, 6-1 and 8-1 to win her category.

Three students from Drogheda School of Karate were also in action and their most successful contender was Joseph Floyd who repeated his victory of 12 months ago when winning the Male Special Kata category.

In the Female Kumite category Dearbhaile Nulty lost to Aysha Kusbey of NIKW and Kaiya Nulty was edged pit by Jodie Kerlin (Ireland JKS).

WKF Rules applied throughout the day and in all there were 33 different categories competed for by contestants from England, Scotland and Ireland - both North and South.
