Gold for Campbell at intervarsities
Dunleer AC's emerging star Garry Campbell gained another string to his bow when securing victory and the European Under-23 Championships qualifying time in the Irish Universities Track & Field Championship 10,000m last Saturday.
The achievement in Athlone follows on from another big achievement for Campbell as he completed the fastest-ever 5km parkrun in Ireland, clocking a time of 14:44 at the event in St Annes Park, Raheny.
Campbell, representing DCU, was joined at the Universities finals by fellow DCU student and Dunleer clubman Jack Boylan, who also produced a fine performance in his event.
Another of Dunleer's most promising talents, javelin thrower Liam Connaughton, was making his first competitive appearance after injury on Sunday and he marked the occasion by winning the Junior Spring Throws competition with a personal best of 55.10m.
Elsewhere, at the Patsy Kelly 5k in Dundalk last Saturday evening there was a fine victory for Dunleer AC's Darragh Greene in 15:24 and a personal best time of 16:44 for 17-year-old Danny O'Brien who was the first junior to finish. The Dunleer men were placed second team, with Greene and O'Brien being supported by Pat Fitzpatrick and Anthony Connolly.
The Dunleer ladies were also second in the team section, led home by Dearbhla Greene, with Kelly Lynch, Denise McGinn and Kim Lynch making up the team.
