Dillon saves Syddan

SYDDAN ... 1-9 GAEIL COLMCILLE ... 1-9 LAST years intermediate champions Syddan are still finding their feet in the senior grade and are still seeking their first win of the campaign.

They haven’t been beaten from their two outings to date following this latest draw against Gaeil Colmcille at Carlanstown on Friday evening last but must break their ‘duck’ against Simonstown in their final match to be sure of a place in the knockout stages.

A Brian Dillon pointed free two minutes from the end saved the day for Shane McEntee’s side and overall a share of the spoils was probably just reward for both teams efforts.

The Kells men led 0-6 to 1-1 at the break, got a fortuitous goal following a mix up in the Syddan defence thirteen minutes into the second half, but then failed from the penalty spot five minutes from the end when keeper James Sheehy denied Michael Finnegan.

Full-forward, Shay Duff, accounted for both of Syddan’s first half scores.

He pointed in the third minute and his seventh minute goal put his side ahead 1-1 to 0-2.

Syddan started brightly in the second half and points from Thomas Dillon, Brian Dillon, Sean Malone and Noel McGillic edged them ahead by the 38th minute.

Trevor Gilsenan and Alan Carry then swopped points before Eugene McGillic found the net for the Kells men. Philip Duff levelled matters by the three quarter way stage and the same player then pointed Syddan ahead.

It was level again with seven minutes remaining before Sheehy saved his side with that fine penalty block. Eugene McGillic again put Gaeil Colmcille ahead but Brian Dillon kept his cool to equalise with two minutes remaining.

SYDDAN: J. Sheehy, R. Clare, F. McKenna, A. Kane, I. Curran, S. Dillon, S. Malone (0-1, J. Dillon, T. Dillon (0-1). P. Duff (0-2), N. McGillic (0-1), B. Dillon (0-2), G. Carolan, S. Duff (1-1), T. Gilsenan (0-1).
