Colmcilles make sure of semi-final place
ST. COLMCILLES ... 1-12 ST. PAULS ... 1-6 ALREADY through to the knockout stages St. Colmcilles booked a semi-final date with Ballivor when finishing as group winners following this IFC win over St. Pauls at Skryne on Wednesday evening last.
Following their recent shock defeat at the hands of Donaghmore/Ashbourne the Seasiders needed a good performance before their semi-final outing.
However they were fully extended for three quarters of the way but finally came good to win comfortably at the finish.
Both sides had to work hard for scores for long period but the one that ultimately decided the issue was of the soft variety as St. Paul’s keeper Mick Fox lost possession and St. Colmcilles Damien Beakey pounced for an easy goal.
That score in the 48th minute left the East Meath outfit leading 1-9 to 1-5 and they wrapped up the match following quick points from John McKenna and Beakey.
St. Colmcilles led by the minimum at the end of an evenly contested opening half, 0-5 to 0-4. The losers were first off the mark with points from Tom Keague and Alan Baker before the winners eventually got moving and they reeled off points from Beakey (two), Niall Ronan and Enda Grogan to lead 0-4 to 0-2 at the end of the opening quarter.
The lively John McKenna had the ‘Cilles other point of the half with Tom Keague and Anthony Moyles contributing late scores for the losers.
St. Paul’s squandered an excellent chance of going ahead two minutes after the restart when Alan Baker was hauled down by keeper Brian Morris. The normally accurate Tom Keague took the resultant penalty kick but shot tamely at Morris who easily smothered the shot.
Full-forward Niall Kerbey from a free, and John McKenna from play added further points before St. Pauls eventually found the net. Sean Moyles and Aiden Minch worked the ball in from near the endline and full-forward Philip Connolly blasted home from close range.
That score levelled the sides and Ronan and Keague then swopped points before St. Colmcilles greater fitness paid dividends in the closing stages.
