Closely-contested encounters in senior singles championship
There was a full house for the Greenhills Bowling Club senior championship singles played last Thursday night.
All games were closely contested and played in a sporting manner with some excellent bowls on view.
In the first match Tommy Mc Guinness took on Alice Leonard in a very tense match as Tommy who has been in a rich vein of form took the first two ends on the bounce to go three up.
Alice slowly but surely regained her composure but Tommy played some excellent draw shots to the head to leave himself four up going into the final end.
Meanwhile Alice needed four shots to draw, every shot was of a premium as she fired a brilliant backhand draw shot to open the head but came up short losing out by five shots with her opponent sealing the victory.
In the second match between two experienced campaigners there was the prospect of an exciting game as Peter Woods was pitted against Anna Farrell.
The latter got of to a decent start taking the first two ends on the trot to go three up.
In the end it was a classic nail-biting finish as both players were taking shot for shot of each other with Anna taking the end but Peter held on to take the spoils by two shots.
In the third match Claire Woods clashed with Alan Thornberry and both players deserve great credit for producing a game of great intensity, taking shot for shot of each other until the third end, with Alan getting his nose in front to go three up.
Claire battled hard for everything, reducing the deficit down to one with two ends to play, and kept plugging away and showed great determination to get her nose in front in the eighth end to go two up with the final end to play.
Meanwhile Alan weathered the storm and showed great mental strength in the last end to secure the victory by three shots in a very tense match.
The next match saw Josephine Moran go head to head against Sadie Campbell.
Josephine stepped it up another gear and performed admirably in the last end and produced the goods when needed and secured the win in fine style by four shots in a tough encounter.
In the fifth game Bridie McGuire took on Anna Farrell.
A ding dong battle ensued between the two players playing excellent bowls under so much tension with Anna holding out to take the win in a nail biting finish by three shots.
The last game of the night was between Valerie Barron and Val McMaguire. The battle was on in the last two ends as Val was counting the cost of his missed opportunities earlier in the game letting Valerie off the hook to steal the show by the narrowest of margins.

Congratulations to three juvenile members, Sophie Thornberry, Megan Devin, Ciara Floyd who were selected to play on the Oriel Zone Senior Ladies Team again Donegal.
Times of play Juveniles Tuesday 7 to 8.15pm, seniors Tuesday and Thursday 8.15pm to 10.30pm.
