In pre-season competition banter about who would feature in 2019 John Kelly (15) was one of the players tipped for success. Well I hope that the tipster is good for a' few Cheltenham pointers this week' as the Premier native came good at the first time of asking as he captured the first SpillAssist ((AVADA Environmental) sponsored Golfer of the Year Singles Stableford at the weekend.

In trying testing conditions over Saturday and Sunday John produced a marvelous level par back nine for 26 points to go with his opening 15 (having started with a ding) for a very comfortable winning score of 41 points. The Back 9 would also feature for the runner-up spot as it was needed to deem David 'Denmark Dave' Hamill (6) the countback winner over Shaun Garey (25) after both had returned 37 points. Question marks hang over the staying power of our early season leader John, as he bolted out of the starting blocks in the Eclectic League but faded late on as mates Damien and Niall cranked up the pressure. We will have to wait and see after all it is a long time until the end of October.

There were a half dozen 2s recorded to get our year long running 2s Competition up and running.

Next weekend, St Patrick's weekend, there will be a Singles Stableford GOY Competition over Sat and Sunday with the first of our Open Green Tee Bank Holiday competitions being played on Monday 18th.

The weather was the winner on Thursday morning as the Seniors wisely decided to remain indoors so round four of the Spring League will take place this Thursday. A speedy recovery from his leg injury to Seniors boss Frank Ryan.

There will be 7 Bank Holiday Green Tee Opens held at Cloverhill in 2019 with the first on March 18. The Open Competition (visitors £12, Members £7) is always played off the shorter Green Tees and this year will carry a prize booster. There will be prizes for the first 3 players in each competition but in addition a persons best 4 cards out of the 7 competitions will see them count towards addition overall prizes of First £100; Second £75 Third £50. Bookings taken at the club or through the BRS system.
