Reds make super start
Leinster U16 FC: Louth 3-12 Wicklow 0-8
Louth Ladies U16s got their Championship campaign under way on Saturday afternoon in a wet, windy and muddy Blessington, with a fully deserved 13 point victory.
The foundation for the win was laid in the opening 10 minutes, as the visitors despite playing against the wind and rain, raced into a 2-3 to 0-0 lead with Ellen McBride and Ava Briscoe getting the goals and points from Roisin Maguire (2) and Rachel Leonard.
The home side with the elements in their favour did get a foothold in the game and hit the next four scores to leave the half time score 2-3 to 0-4. The visitors were helped along with some great defending along with a couple of fantastic saves from keeper Rebecca Lambe Fagan. With the conditions getting worse by the minutes, the fear for the many travelling supporters at half time was that the game would be abandoned, but thankfully the rain eased a little as the teams took shelter for the break.
The second half was largely dominated by Louth as a third goal was added from the boot of Rachel Leonard, and from that to the end the result was never in doubt as the Louth management gave all 11 replacements a taste of Championship action. Rachel Leonard added a further 2 points to her tally while the very accurate Roisin Maguire (4) and Sarah Gilmore (3) completed the Louth scoring.
Louth have now 2 home games coming up against Carlow and Kilkenny, with the first of these at the end of March when Carlow come to visit.
A special thanks goes to LENRA construction from Tullyallen wh has sponsored a new kit for the girls, and to LIDL Dundalk for supplying refreshments for the team.
