Doherty does the damage for Joes
GAA: division 2 football league - St Joseph's 3-8 Kilkerly Emmets 1-9
The Joes collected their second win of their Division 2 League campaign when a late late show from Craig Doherty helped them to a five point win on Friday night.
It was the Joes with the aid of the breeze who opened the scoring when Daire Smyth beat three men along the end line to slot the ball to the Kilkerley net with just three minutes on the clock.
Two minutes later the ever-dangerous Tadgh McEneaney got through on goal and despite the best efforts of the Joes keeper Shane Barron Kilkerley were level.
With defences on top scores were scarce but Alan Lynch was on target with points on 26 and 27 minutes to edge the Joes ahead. Kilkerley equalised in the final minute of the half from a McEneaney free, to make it 1-3 apiece.
Kilkerley were denied by both uprights at the start of the half before Thomas Smyth found Craig Doherty who setup Conal Smyth for a Joes point.
Conal Smyth and Shane Lennon traded points at the start of the second half before Killian Staunton battled past three players to strike a second goal for the Joes. Conal Smyth adding a point to leave the Joes ahead 2-5 to 1-4 on 35 minutes.
Kilkerley lifted their game and hit three unanswered points from Lennon, free and an excellent strike from wide right by Cillian Kempes to narrow the margin to a single point on 42 minutes. Two Kilkerley points in as many minutes from the midfield duo of Lennon and Cathal Bellew had Kilkerley ahead 1-9 to 2-5 on 47 minutes.
Alan Quigley got the Joes back on terms but just when it looked as if the points would be shared, it was Craig Doherty who showed nerves of steel when he converted a 30m free from the left side line to put the Joes ahead on 59 minutes.
Doherty then sealed the win in injury-time when he fired home a third goal before Alan Quigley landed the final point of the game.
