Curraha out of their depth in 'Hill clash

Summerhill 5-27 Curraha 0-7

Sean Wall

With a host or regulars - including James McEntee, Conor Moriarty, David Toner and Neil Shortall - absent from the Curraha line-up this SFC encounter proved a poor advertisement for football in the county at Pairc Tailteann on Saturday evening.

A massive 35 points separated the sides at the finish and it would have been much worse for last year's intermediate champions had keeper Liam Hogan not pulled off a string of point-blank saves.

Summerhill made the most of Curraha's shortcomings to greatly enhance their scoring tally in Group B. Poor Curraha were completely out of their depth in their quest for a first-ever championship win at this level. They now face an uphill battle, starting against Na Fianna in their next outing, if they are to avoid the relegation play-off.

Curraha actually led after David Coyle pointed in the opening minute, but it soon became embarrassingly one-sided as last year's beaten finalists cut loose.

Keeper Hogan denied Kevin Ryan a goal on three minutes, but the 'Hill didn't have long to wait before they raised the green flag for the first time. Summerhill practically walked the ball into the net, with full forward Barry Dardis applying the finishing touch on five minutes.

The 'Hill went close to adding to their goal tally in that opening half but were forced to settle for a 1-13 to 0-3 lead at the break. Curraha's remaining points of the half came from Sean Keogh frees.

John Lyons' charges piled on the agony in the third quarter, with the impressive David Larkin and Kevin Ryan adding further goals within six minutes of the restart.

By the time substitute Mark Phelan opened Curraha's second-half account on 50 minutes Summerhill had added two further goals, both from Conor Frayne within a minute of each other.

Frayne took the scoring honours with 2-7, closely followed by Barry Dardis with 1-7 and David Larkin with 1-6.

Pity the spectators who paid €10 to see such a one-sided affair.
