Byrne brothers shine for Mochtas

Division 1/2 semi-final - St Mochtas 1-26, Clan na Gael 4-5

Declan and Ciaran Byrne combined to inspire a stunning St Mochtas comeback as the Louth Village men secured their place in the Division 1/2 play-off final at Clan na Gael Park on Saturday evening.

The brothers scored a combined tally of 17 points in a game where the Mochtas turned in a magnificent scoring display, particularly in the second half.

It wasn't looking good for the Mochtas as they trailed by four points at half time, but they turned the game completely on its head after the restart and outscored their opponents by 1-18 to 1-2.

As a result, the winners will take on Dundalk Gaels in the final with the winners taking their place in the top flight.

It was the Clans who had the better of the first half and their eye for goal put them in a strong position. Billy Smith set the tone for the hosts as he opened their account with a goals, before adding a second soon after.

The Mochtas kept in touch with the help of points from the Byrne brothers but at the other end Conall McKeever hit the net to send his team in with a 3-3 to 0-8 advantage at half time.

The Clans would have fancied their chances to complete the job from that position, but few could have predicted the one-sided nature of the second half as the Mochtas were in complete control.

In a fine display of shooting, the visitors also had points from Cormac Smyth, Brendan Duff and Ciaran McMahon, while Craig Lennon put the icing on the cake with a goal.

Robbie Curran did grab a consolation goal for the Clans, but their miserable evening was complete when Billy Smith was sent-off with five minutes remaining.

The Louth Village side raised their game in the second half and points from the Byrnes and a Craig Lennon goal saw them comfortably over the line. A Robbie Curran goal proved little more than consolation for the Clans.
