Yapstone Drogheda 10k for Paddy
Hubert Murphy reports on another wonderful day for the town of Drogheda
Paddy Hamilton (Slieve Gullion Runners) smashed the course record as he scorched home in 31.39 to win the Yapstone Drogheda 10k on a glorious Sunday afternoon in Drogheda.
Thousands piled onto the streets to soak up the atmosphere and almost 2,000 runners from Ireland and abroad put on a wonderful show of guts and determination.
But Hamilton was the superstar on the day and he blazed away from the field early on and was a well merited winner in the end. He beat the old record by 22 seconds.
The first of the Drogheda and District AC members home was Mark O'Shea in 6th in 33.54. Eoin Hughes had come in second with Dylan Keegan behind him.
Emma Mitchel was the first woman home in 36.58, followed in by Niamh Clifford and Niamh Devlin. Mary Leech was just behind them in 39.11.
Other DDAC members, Yasmin Canning and Michelle Hughes also finished in the top 10.
Mary also won the ladies 0/40 race while the O/50s went to Anita Bolton, with a great showing too from Mairead Murphy from the Cilles AC and Margaret Finlay from the WaterWipes/Irish Breeze team.
The evergreen Naula Reilly won the o/60 grade, seeing off the Duleek club stars Ann Noone and Patricia McGlone.
Clodagh Veale was just outside the hour mark in winning the o/70s women title.
The junior women went to Aisling Haigney.
Declan Toal won the mens o/40, Tommy Hughes pipping Pat O'Grady for the o/50 crown. Chris Keeling edged out Andrew Rogers from Togher for the o/60s.
Drogheda member Gerry Carroll claimed the o/70 with the junior star being Sean McMahon from the Wolfe Tones GFC.
The event was again an amazing success for the organisers with so many groups and sponsors coming together to make sure it was another winner for the town.
