Vandals torch Ardee river walk lifebuoys

Vandals who set fire to a number of lifebuoy stands by the river walk in Ardee have been condemned for what one councillor says was a 'cruel act'.

Cllr Jim Tenanty said the incident could have cost a life as there were no rings by the river during last week's storms.

'There was a flood in the river and this put lives in jeopardy. If there had been an accident and somebody fell into the river, there was no lifebuoy.'

Three of the stands were set alight, probably with petrol, and destroyed. The lifebuoys were also removed. 'Those that did this should be ashamed,' he added.
