Two gardai commended for saving youth

Hubert Murphy

The quick actions of two local gardai saved the life of a teenager when he became trapped in railings.

The two officers, Garda Mark Spain and Garda Thomas Featherston, were last week presented with certificates of commendation for their efforts by Chief Supt Christy Mangan and Supt Andrew Watters.

'They did great work in saving the chap that day and that deserved to be recognised,' Supt Watters stated. 'He had become red in the face and the two officers were very concerned.'

The two gardai were on duty on 30th of March 2018 in the Tredagh View area when Garda Featherston observed a child who appeared to be in a distressed state in a garden.

On further investigation they discovered that a 15 year old boy had his neck trapped between the loops of a stainless steel boundary fence of the garden.

The child was losing consciousness and the Garda intervention and quick action freed him from his struggle before emergency services were called. This resulted in a positive outcome for the child.

Both officers were praised on social media last week for their part in the rescue, following the presentation of the Commendations for Excellent Police Work.
