SEAPOINT Golf Club showed that it has all the capabilities to hold a major golf tournament when the Irish Senior Ladies Open took place last week.

The two day event, taking place on Wednesday and Thursday last, went off without a hitch and the players were full of praise for both the course and the club.

The host club was represented by Frances Stanley, who was in the first group to tee off on the first day last Wednesday, while players from nearby Co Louth Golf Club in Baltray also made an appearance.

They included Valerie Breen, Pat Murray, Sheila Nelson, Kathleen Stamer, Vera Rock and Susan Kenny.

Nine nationalities were represented in the third staging of the Championship, which was held last year in Baltray, including the United States, Canada, Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Scotland, England and Ireland.

Also in Termonfeckin for the tournament were other Irish winners of the British Championship, Dr Gerry Costello (1985) and Valerie Hassett (1986).

A spokesperson for Seapoint GC said the club was delighted to be holding such a prestigious championship, having been the venue for last year’s Irish Youths Open.

This year’s Championship had an added importance for home players as the team to represent Ireland in the inaugural Senior Home International Championship was nominated after the event.
