Over 1,000 people join in 'Darkness Into Light' walk

Hubert Murphy

THE Darkness into Light walk on Saturday proved to be an outstanding success.

The event, in aid of Pieta House, saw Drogheda as a location for the first time and up to 1,000 people ventured out at 4am to the O'Raghallaigh's to take part in the 5k walk and run.

The organisers were delighted with the turnout and the massive amount of support they received for the event.

They managed to get many items sponsored, from tea bags to milk, and rewarded the finishers with warm refreshment when they arrived back.

The aim of the event is to symbolise the walk from the dark into the light for those that need support.

A team of volunteers made sure the walker and runners were safe at junctions and part of the route from the club was paved with candles.

The ambassador for the walk locally, Niall Ronan was there, along with the likes of Mayor Richie Culhane.

It is hoped the event will be even bigger next year.
