Opportunity to create your very own work of art at beautiful Bettystown beach

The National Sandcastle and Sand Sculpturing Festival takes place on Bettystown Beach, Co Meath on the weekend of 29th and 30th June.

The Festival commences with the Beach Sports day on Saturday 29th June followed by the Sandcastle competition on Sunday 30th.

This event is now in its 17th year and is a chance for families to have fun and use their imagination to build Sandcastles and Sculptures. No experience necessary and all are welcome.

Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation Heather Humphreys TD will be presenting the prizes and has said " This fantastic event embodies the community spirit that Bettystown is so famous for. Not only is it a wonderful social outlet for local families, it also attracts visitors from near and far, which benefits local businesses.

'I would like to commend the group of volunteers, who give of their time freely to make the event happen every year. I wish them every success on 30th June and greatly look forward to attending and presenting the prizes."

Directions: Enter the beach at Bettystown and from slipway on beach take a right turn towards Laytown. Parking is available at the event. It will be signposted.

Category: Sandcastles Under 5, Under 8, Under 13, and Family. Winners will receive prizes and vouchers.

Category: Senior Sculpture: 1st €500, 2nd €250, 3rd €100

Category: Junior Sculpture: 1st €50, 2nd €30, 3rd €20

The overall winner of the Sandcastles Competition will be presented with the "Dick O'Reilly Perpetual Cup" which is presented each year to the individual or group who showed or displayed best effort on the day.

Entry Fee: Sandcastle €2.00 per person. Registration 2.30pm

Entry Fee: Senior Sculpture €5.00 per person . Registration 10.30am Entry Fee: Junior Sculpture €3.00 per person..Registration 10.30am to 2.30pm

Judging Criteria: 1) Originality/creativity 2) Attention to detail 3) Artistic impression

Building Schedule: Judges will start touring at 3.00pm finishing at 4.00pm

Heather Humphreys TD will present the prizes around 4.30pm.
