Number of people robbed on the same night by man (35)

A chronic alcoholic who committed a number of assaults and robbed a number of people during one night in Drogheda has been sentenced to nine months in prison.

Issa Elmasri (35) and another man approached their first victim on Dyer Street, Drogheda. The other man started to assault the victim and Elmasri then joined in.

Shortly afterwards Elmasri approached a male and put his hand on his chest. He threatened him and demanded he hand over money. The victim handed him €20.

Elmasri then approached another man and assaulted him and robbed another man of €25.

Elmasri, of Dublin Road in Drogheda admitted the assaults and robberies which took place on November 7th, 2015 on Dyer Street, Shop Street and Dublin Road in Drogheda.

He has 11 previous convictions for public order offences, criminal damage and drugs offences.

Defence barrister Ronan O'Carroll said Elmasri has expressed his shame at the offences he committed.

'He doesn't have a place to stay at and his partner won't let him home unless he deals with his alcohol problems,' said Mr O'Carroll, adding that Elmasri has a chronic addiction to alcohol.

'He made attempts in the past to address his problem,' said Mr O'Carroll, adding that the defendant has no history of violence or thefts.

'It's not in his nature and it was out of character and his record to date reflects that. If he drinks he misbehaves,' he said.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed nine months in custody for the robbery charges and imposed three months in custody for the assaults, to run concurrently.
