Musicians tune up for Trad Music Weekend

DROGHEDA TRADITIONAL Music Weekend will take place this year from Friday November 29th to December 1st, and as always there will be a host of events to suit everyone.

This annual festival is a celebration of traditional Irish music and singing and has evolved over 17 years into one of the highlights in Drogheda's cultural calendar year.

Over the three days, the festival will present a series of workshops, concerts, sessions and master-classes presented by a number of acclaimed traditional music artists.

On Friday 29th, a number of schools in the Drogheda area will take part in music workshops with Mark Redmond (Uilleann Pipes) and Deirdre Ní Bhuachalla (Harp).

Droichead Arts Centre host a Traditional Music and Singing Concert for primary schools featuring guest singers Gerry Cullen, Stephen McArdle, Jilly Cullen, Aideen Morrissey and Mark Redmond on Uilleann Pipes.

That evening Brendan Begley and family with special guests séan-nós singer Nell Ní Chróinín and local group Sunday's Gate Quartet perform in a vibrant concert in Droichead Arts Centre.

Musicians Donal O'Connor, Paul Meehan and Martin Meehan will give master-classes in fiddle, guitar and flute on Saturday 30th in Barlow House.

They will also perform later that day in the historic settings of Drogheda's Tourist Office, The Tholsel. Throughout the afternoon you can drop into a number of free music sessions taking place in cafes and pubs in D'vine, Stockwell Artisan, O'Casey's and Carberry's.

Saturday 30th is described as a 'Day of Dancing' at the Barbican Centre with set dancing workshops followed by a Grand Ceilí in the evening led by Triskell Ceilí Band and guests Brendan Begley and family.

Early afternoon of Sunday 1st December there are sessions in Droichead Arts Centre and the Salthouse Restaurant.

There's a strong focus on traditional song for Sunday's events with a Singing Workshop led by Kevin Branigan and Brendan Begley followed by a Singing Session in Droichead Arts Centre. Closing the festival is the final session in Cagney's Bar.
