Major drugs issue in Dundalk

Although Drogheda's ongoing feud has caught the national headlines, the war against drugs in raging around the whole county.

'There is intimidation in Dundalk as well,' Chief Supt Mangan stated.

He said one woman had lost an eye and people were before the courts for that.

He said the likes of Dunleer needed more gardai and he was aware of that.

'Sgt John Heavey does a great job here and we'd like another four or five John Heavey's,' he stated.

He confirmed that the criminal dispute in Drogheda had spread to the likes of Ardee and Annagassan.

'It is a huge issue but it can be dealt with, provided there's a co-ordinated approach and a plan and the resources for it.

'There have been fall outs in estates in Dundalk,' he confirmed.

He said a multi agency approach was needed and it was not just an issue for the gardai.

He said that since 2008, there had been a huge hit in services and their resources to help people and families to tackle their drug issues.

He says it is vital that all elements be resourced to meet the problems head on.

'We want people to be confident enough to come to us to deal with this.

'Don't let the dealets get roots in your community,' he urged.
