Kelly's cow is one of the best in the land!

Tom Kelly has returned to his dairy farm near Drogheda with two of the top prizes at the 2019 Diageo Baileys Champion Cow Competition in Co. Cavan. Tom won the Best Protein Award and the Best Economic Breeding Index.

Diageo and its cream supplier, Glanbia Ireland have sponsored the competition which takes place at the Virginia Show for the past 36 years.

It rewards strength and form in body conformation as well as proven excellence in quality milk production.

Widely acknowledged as Ireland's top dairy livestock event, attracting the super-elite of the Holstein Friesian breed, the top awards were presented by Enterprise Minister, Heather Humphreys T.D.; Robert Murphy Head of Baileys Operations, Diageo Baileys Global Supply and Martin Keane Chairman of Glanbia Ireland.

Speaking at the event Martin Keane, Glanbia Group Chairman said each year the contest, with a prize fund of €10,000, attracts elite pedigree cows from throughout the country:

"Breeding the champion dairy cow is a dream for every top-class Holstein Friesian breeder," he said.

"Once again it was a tough task for the judge to select the worthy winner. It was evident that the exhibitors have all worked hard over many years, and sometimes generations, to breed the calibre of cows that were on display at Virginia Show."
