WHY NOT build up a thirst for St Patrick's Day, and take to the streets the day before – all in the name of charity?

The third Annual SVP/Drogheda Independent 5k Fun Run takes place through the streets of Drogheda starting in Laurence Street this Sunday at 3 p.m.

The event is part of the Athletics Association of Ireland calendar and is chip timed.

'The weather is set to be lovely, so we are hoping hundreds of families, runners, joggers and walkers will get up off the couch, hit the streets and help people in need in your locality,' says Valerie Campbell from the local branch of St. Vincent de Paul.

'We invite you to walk, jog or run this very popular event. It is open to everyone all levels of fitness from the Sunday strollers to elite runners and is a great family day out.'

If you are a member of a gym, club, team an Operation Transformation group, Age Active group, walking group, Mums Town, there is still time to put in a team to representative your group.

'This was a super day last year, and we are hoping that even more will turn out to help raise funds for those who need it most in our own community,' she adds.

'The chip timing attracts the more elite runners, but just like last year, it will be a day for all the family, with a special family entry price for a family of four, and fun races for the children.'

The 5k will follow the same route as last year, beginning in Laurence Street, heading for Mell and back to the Laurence Town Centre.

'All funds raised go to helping people in need in your local community, so as well as a fun day of exercise just before St Patrick's Day, you are helping people out less fortunate than yourself.'

The cost is €15 per person or €35 for two adults and two children and sponsorship cards are available from the SVP Drogheda Area Office.

Book online at or through SVP Area Office, shops or the Drogheda Independent.
