IT has been formally proposed that the link road between Francis Street and King Street be named in honour of one of Drogheda's greatest historians and researchers.

Councillors will be asked to name the road Jim Garry Way in a wonderful act of recognition of Jim's sterling work over many decades.

He helped chronicle much of the town's past, including compiling histories of both St Peters and Calvary cemeteries.

The present road is a pedestrian route between the two streets and is expected to open to traffic in the future when the Laurence's Gate closure is confirmed.

Mayor Paul Bell is to motion the elected members of Drogheda Borough Council to name the new link road in Jim's memory and for his massive contribution to the Old Drogheda Society.

'I believe it's time to have a fitting tribute and gesture be made to one of Drogheda's most highly regarded and loved sons and the location of the road which is in view of Laurence's Gate one of Drogheda most historic icons is truly fitting for a man who gave so much for so little. I hope that the elected members will support my initiative and I have motioned that the road be named 'Jim Garry Way', he stated

He also stated that the naming would be in honour of all those who have strived to keep the past alive in the historic borough.

The motion will be heard at the May meeting of the Council.
