Former Thatch pub is transformed
The famed Thatch on the Donore Road is almost back to its best.
The building has undergone a total re-thatch in recent weeks, much to the delight of local councillor, Paul Bell.
It follows on the expert job done on Harty's Cottage on the northside of the town.
"I set out to save both of these historic buildings and with the assistance of funding from Louth County Council, Government grants under the endangered buildings scheme and in the case of the Thatch Pub, financial assistance from the owners of the property. A five year campaign has met with success turning eyesores into conservation demonstrating what can be done when a clear focus is applied,' the councillor stated.
Bell added, "On a personal note I wish to thank Peter Childs, our local master thatcher, for his superb supervision and craft on both Harty's Cottage and The Thactch on Donore Road. I would obviously like to see both cottages put to use which in itself would help both structures to be preserved into the future and to this end I do intend to enter into discussion with Louth County Council. The Thatch Pub cottage is also very eye catching located on the gateway to Drogheda town centre and when visitors pass on route to the Boyne Valley".
