Callaghan’s fall victim of ram-raider
An early morning ram-raid turned into a ‘ham’ raid after a hungry thief targeted Callaghan’s award winning butcher’s shop in Ardee.
Around 4am last Wednesday morning, a vehicle was used to smash through the doors of the shop by reversing through them.
It took several attempts before the doors finally gave way, the driver then calmly stepping from the vehicle, putting his hood up and walking into the shop.
The whole episode was captured on CCTV and has now gone viral.
‘We had a visitor last Wednesday at 4am. He was under the impression that we do an after hours self service drive thru,’ the firm quipped on their Facebook page this week.
Indeed, they added an audio and offered a €50 voucher for the best comment.
One of the comments said the driver should be called ‘The 4am rasher dasher!’
By Monday morning it had reached 30,000 views.
‘Somebody even wrote a song about the incident,’ Peter Callaghan revealed.
Saying the thief certainly knew quality when he raided their shop, Peter thanked the gardai for their quick action on the night.
‘We have the alarm monitored and I got a call about it and then the postman rang me to say we’d been robbed and when I got there - about four minutes later - the gardai were already on the scene,’ he remarked.
The car caused considerable damage to the front doors as well as smashing a fridge unit. Up to €3,000 worth of food had to be thrown out and it took hours of cleaning up broken glass before it was business as usual for the popular shop.
‘We have just been declared as having the best black pudding in Leinster, so maybe he was looking for that!,’ Peter added.
It is believed the thief checked the empty tills before driving away. Gardai are investigating the incident.
Callaghan’s butcher shop has been a landmark in Ardee for four generations and more than a hundred years. Their meats are famous and their black and white pudding has come first in Ireland three times.
The black pudding also won a BBC Great Taste award and they won a European award for their white pudding at the 2012 European White Pudding Championships in Normandy, finishing in the top ten out of 1,600 entries.
