Alzheimer group's announcement
The bid to raise enough cash for a new Alzheimer daycare centre in Drogheda is being stepped up markedly in the months ahead.
And with this in mind the major fund-raising initiative which has been ongoing is being re-launched.
A high-profile event is being held to mark the re-launch at the Westcourt Hotel at 8pm on Wednesday, May 29.
Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, Olympic legend Ronnie Delany and Alzheimer Society of Ireland CEO, Pat McLoughlin, will be among the special guests for the event.
Local politicians and dignatories have also being invited for the night.
A major announcement about plans for the new centre is to be made at the event.
For over two decades, fund-raising for a purpose-built centre has been going on and the current tally stands at just over €600,000. But there is now a new urgency in getting to the final figure of €950,000, for the temporary home of the Alzheimer centre off the Donore Road will only be available to the Drogheda branch until next year.
At that stage, they will have to vacate the premises and they are hoping that, rather than having to move to another temporary premises, they will be able to look forward to moving into their brand new centre on a site at Greenhills.
But to do that, they will need to get to the target total so that shovels can go into the ground at the site as soon as possible.
''The people of Drogheda and district have been enormously generous in helping us get to our current total, '' says branch chairman Noel Heeney. ''But now we have to move up another gear to get some major donations which could push us towards the money we need to build the centre,'' he says.
''We are hoping that we can encourage some businesses and corporate interests to come on board and give us a helping hand,'' he adds.
