Volunteers sleep out for homeless

Some of the best known characters of Drogheda came together on Saturday and Sunday last to take part in a 24 hour sponsored sleep out to raise much needed funds for local charity Drogheda Homeless Aid.

They hope to reach a total of €65,000 as a result of the event.

In a massive act of compassion, volunteers donned their winter woollies and stayed out on West St in horrendous weather conditions with very strong winds and pelting rain, to highlight Drogheda Homeless Aid's cause and to help them boost their income from their annual sponsored sleep out.

Six very hardy public representatives put their vast political differences aside and braved subzero temperatures to help the poor and marginalized of their town. This year they were joined again by five representatives from IFS, a Statestreet company, and eleven other locals. Statestreet very kindly sponsored the sleepout to the tune of €10,500, and they are in a position to match the funds raised individually by their staff who participated. Coca Cola also very kindly donated €2,000 towards the sleepout.

'I have so much admiration for all of everyone who took part', said Karen Smyth, Director of Drogheda Homeless Aid.

They would particularly like to thank David Walsh, Flogas, Westcourt Hotel, Zilay Flooring, Floorstyle, Stockwell Artisan Foods, Pat Shields From PS Electrical, St. Peter's Parish, Drogheda Hire, Esquires Coffee House and all of the other local coffee shops and eateries that very kindly stopped by and offered refreshments to the participants.

'We have raised a staggering €17,994 from the street collection itself, and in total so far we have made €48,160, due to the tremendous support we have received from local companies in terms of sponsorship. We are hoping that our overall figure will be €65,000, which will help cover some of the many reductions we have borne in our funding this year,' Karen stated.

'We had such an amazing response from the people of Drogheda throughout the sleep out, and we would like to thank each and every person who made a donation, whether it was 50 cent or 50 euro it is so appreciated. We would also like to thank all of the shop keepers and local businesses who allowed our collectors to stand outside their premises to collect money, and we would like to thank the collectors themselves.
