May's 90th rocks Hunterstown Inn!
May Flanagan from Old Mellifont was surrounded by her family, neighbours and friends as she celebrated her 90th birthday with a party in the Hunterstown Inn recently.
Originally from Oakwood, Ballyhaise in County Cavan, May moved to Drogheda as a teenager to work as a housekeeper for the Stanley family in Killineer and it was while working here that she met her late husband John Flanagan who passed away in January 2009.
The couple married in June 1948 at the tender age of 21 and settled in Old Mellifont where they went on to have eleven children; Paddy, Marie, Rita, Sean, twins Ann and Michael, Oliver, Bernadette, Fr Malachy, Noel and Francis. May still resides in Old Mellifont with her youngest son however, she never lost touch with her roots and still returns to her beloved Cavan for a visit every summer.
Fr Malachy who is an SMA father celebrated a special Mass on Saturday evening to mark May's 90th birthday and this was followed by the party on Sunday evening in Hunterstown where May was joined by her children as well as her 29 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren (and still counting!) and a number of her neighbours. Her special birthday cake was made by granddaughter Orla Coyle and the theme fo the cakes was the shack in Ballyhaise with a picture of an old thatched cottage.
