Dessie is top referee in the county

Hubert Murphy - The Diary

Well done St. Nicholas G.F.C Chairman Dessie McDonald on being named as Referee of the Year award at the annual GAA referees Christmas party. Being a ref, never mind in GAA, is a tough ask for people and total credit to Dessie. A well done.

Fin's artwork

I spotted some great artwork by Fin Collins in Scotch Hall recently. Very impressive Fin.

Garda rugby team

The Louth Meath garda division are pretty well known when it comes to soccer in days gone by, but they also had a rugby team, certainly back in the 1980s.

They played in the Inter Divisional C'ship and had a wonderful star in Pat O'Boyle. Apparently Pat wasn't the quickest, but had great positional sense. Ollie Walsh was another hero of that side. Scrumhalf was John McGinley.

Mother Mary still a hero

I was at the public meeting last week in relation to the setting up of a committee to prevent the change of the name of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

One thing is certain - people are very passionate about this and those seeking the change better be aware of the depth of feeling that still exists for Mother Mary Martin, once voted the greatest person that Drogheda has ever produced in a poll in this paper.

Ricky's book is perfect

If you are still searching for a present for someone, then go no further than Ricky Gerrard's new book on the Industries and Stories of Drogheda.

It is a three book series in one and features some incredible stories.

Get name on mayor's chains

A great point raised by Liam Reilly during his talk on the mayoral chains of Drogheda recently.

He said a lot of people who were mayor didn't get their name on the links on the chain and he suggested it might be a good idea for family members to look at having their relative's name added.

The chains are getting very long and may be retired in the coming years, so now is the time to act.
