As Meatloaf sang, "Two out of Three ain't bad", and the title of this song could certainly apply to the recent local elections. From a historical perspective, three Parishioners were seeking a Louth Co. Council seat for the Drogheda Rural area, Michelle Hall (Labour), Eamon Sweeney (Renua Ireland) and Oliver Tully (Fine Gael). Eleven candidates were in the running with only four seats up for grabs.
Early on Saturday morning of the count, tallies had Michelle Hall about 20 votes ahead of Oliver Tully, leaving Eamon Sweeney with a bit of ground to catch up given he was in 6th position. It was a different story when the first count was completed.
Oliver Tully secured 965 first preference votes, one ahead of first timer Michelle Hall. Thus began process of distribution of 2nd preference votes and elimination of the lower placed candidates. Oliver Tully was elected on the 6th count having reached the quota. Michelle Hall crossed the line on the 7th count.
However, Eamon Sweeney's votes began to increase slowly but surely moving him up the line to 5th position until at the last count he was the last man standing, just missing out on a seat. Eamon polled a very credibile 588 first preference votes given it was his first time to run for the local elections.
Eamon, despite not securing a seat, it was an excellent performance.
Meanwhile, congratulations to both Oliver and Michelle and no doubt they will represent this area very well on the Council.
Hope your eye is better, Oliver.
