Tidy Towns Draw

The Slane Tidy Towns draw for July was held in the Village Inn and the winners were: €100 Jim Clarke, €60 Alwyn Mooney, €50 Mary Heavey, €40 Robert Argyle, €30 Nicola Byrne. The next draw takes place in the Boyne Valley Inn on Friday August 30th. To join the draw contact John at 087 2644603.

Chapel Street Band On Tour

The very popular Chapel Street Band from Slane will perform a fundraiser in Drumshallon Forge Heritage Centre this Friday, August 9th, at 8.30pm.

An evening of the best in traditional, Irish music, song and craic is guaranteed from a band that has up on two dozen great musicians. Admission is just €10 and the night's entertainment should get everyone into the mood for Fleadh Cheol na hEireann in Drogheda the following week. The heritage centre is situated on the Ballymakenny to Grangebellew Road, approximately six miles from Drogheda, close to Piperstown Equestrian Centre. (Eircode A92 DF7X)

Men's Shed Invite

After almost two years of effort by a small team Slane & District Men's Shed is now almost complete and the public is invited to drop down, see the place and have a chat.

It is located in the Slane Industrial Estate and it will be open five days each week - initially from 10am to 4pm. The facility will make possible a wide range of activities both on and off the premises. Golf Classic

Slane GFC have their annual Golf Classic at the Ballymascanlon House Hotel course this Saturday, August 10th. Team of four €240, including food. Available tee times between 8am and 2.30pm. To reserve a tee time contact Nick 087 9152026, Peter 087 6809145, Colm 087 2380059.

Pilgrimage to Knock

The annual diocesan pilgrimage to Knock takes place this Sunday, August 11th. A bus will leave from Slane village at 8am sharp. To book a place call the parish office at 041 9884429. The pilgrimage will be led by Bishop Deenihan and the diocesan choir will also be in attendance. The annual one day trip to Lough Derg will take place on Tuesday, August 20th. Feast of the Assumption

To celebrate The Feast of the Assumption and the Holy Well on the 15th of August, there will be Mass in St Patrick's Church Slane at 7pm on Wednesday, August 14th. Immediately after Mass there is a procession to the Holy Well and all are welcome to take part, especially the boys and girls who made their Holy Communion and Confirmation this year.

Boyne Music Festival

Chamber music, poetry and song will feature in this year's Boyne Music Festival which takes place from August 8th - 11th at Townley Hall on the Slane Road, Drogheda. There will be concerts, workshops, tours, poetry and talks and among those taking part will be Deirdre Brenner, Zoe Conway, Neil McCarthy, John McIntyre and Robert Cohen.

Road Closure

Meath County Council has received funding from Transport Infrastructure Ireland to carry out resurfacing and associated works on the N2 through Slane village and across Slane Bridge, and has now appointed a contractor to carry out the work.

The contractor has advised, for health and safety reasons, it will be necessary to implement a full road closure on the N2 in order to carry out these works in a timely and safe manner. It is proposed to temporary close the road North of the N2/N51 cross roads between its junction with the N51 Slane Drogheda Road and a point 1.1km north of that junction from Monday August 12th until Thursday August 22nd, both days inclusive.

Also the road South of the N2/N51Cross Roads between its junction with the N51 Slane Drogheda Road and its junction with the L1600 McGruders Cross, from Thursday August 22nd until Friday August 30th, both days inclusive.

Slane Castle History

Slane Castle will be celebrating the start of heritage week with a 'Portraits Come Alive Tour' on Saturday, August 17th and Sunday 18th.

Join and meet the characters who shaped the castle's history. Covering the Conyngham family's colourful history and paintings, journey through the castle as these paintings come alive to give you a flavour of their life in the 1800's From royalty, romance, conflict and chambermaids, each on has a story to tell.

Slane Past & Present

An historic walking tour of Slane Village takes place on Sunday August 25th from 11am - 5pm. Meet at The Hub Tourist Office at 11am - Walk to the Hill of Slane and back to the village at 12.30pm for exploring and quick bite. Leave The Hub at 2pm for walk to Slane Distillery. If weather permits a talk from a local historian at 4pm and finally a horse & cart ride back to the village.

Hill of Slane Tours

Free tours of the Hill of Slane take place every Saturday and Sundayand Bank Holiday at 2pm from the car park.

Tours last approximately 40 minutes. Tours are available at other times by arrangement. Contact or Slane Tourist Office/The Hub on 041 9824000. The Hill of Slane Tour Guides are looking for new members. If you have a couple of spare hours at the weekend and have an interest in history contact The Hub with your details.

Rathkenny AC 5K

Registration for the annual Rathkenny AC 5k road race and fun run which takes place on Friday August 16th at 7.30pm is filling up fast. Registration is €15 (plus booking fee) with €20 registration on the night. Special group rates are also available.

T-shirts which were available for the first 200 people to register have been allocated. However an extra 100 T-shirts have been made available.

There is a capacity limit for the race and if this is reached in advance there will be no registration on the evening of the run. This is an AAI approved event and registration details are available on the Rathkenny AC facebook page or contact Brendan on 086 0724911.

Pride of Place

Thanks to all Community Members who are making an effort to present the District in a positive light. Community Volunteers have swung into action, in no uncertain manner, again this Summer, all throughout the District, demonstrating a Sense and Pride of Place that we all can be proud of. Be Fleadh Ready

Fleadh Ceoil na h-Eireann kicks off in Drogheda next Sunday 11th August and runs for the full week. This is a unique experience not to be missed. The sheer scale of the occasion is a wonder. Don't miss it!

Local Bands Playing at Fleadh Ceilis

Two local Ceili Bands, Triskell and the Tara, will ply their trade at the Fleadh again this year.

The Fleadh Set Dance Ceili in McHugh's, Chord Road (A92 E2NK) is on Thursday 15th August starting at 9pm. Triskell will provide the music.

The Fior Ceili is on Saturday 17th August starting at 9 pm in The Lourdes Community and Recreation Centre, Yellowbatter (A92 RW 77). The Tara Ceili Band will provide the music.

Marty's Party

Congratulations to Marty Englishby who celebrated a significant roundy birthday recently.

To mark the occasion Marty took relatives and friends on a historical tour of a number of locations in the Boyne Valley (The Stations).

To round off the roundy birthday, there was a finale party in Mathew's Lounge, Collon last weekend. Refreshments, cake and photos, and good craic, what more could you ask for. Well done Marty! Now for the penance!

TUS vacancy

A TUS vacancy exists with Broomfield and District Residents Association. The Work Programme involves Care-taking duties in and around Teach Raithneach, as well as the maintenance and up-keep of a number of amenities throughout the District. Tús is a one-year community work placement scheme for people who are unemployed for more than 12 months and in receipt of a jobseeker's payment.
