Around the districts: Broomfield, Termonfeckin

Broomfield: First meeting - The first meeting of the newly elected Executive Committee of Broomfield & District Residents Association took place on Wednesday 23rd October last.

The main item on the Agenda was the election of Officers for the coming year.

Those elected to Officership are as follows: Chairperson Mary Morgan, Vice-chairperson Teresa Dillon, Secretary Gerard Weldon and Treasurer Stephen O'Donoghue. Committee Members Josie Mongey, Breege Drew, Margaret Barron, Niall Callan, Hazel O'Donoghue and Grainne Weldon.

A priority for the incoming Committee will be engaging with the Community. The poor attendance at the A.G.M was worrying to say the least, so major engagement with The Community is required. The full potential of the Association and the Community will only be achieved with the engagement and support of Community Members in all aspects of the Associations work.

Church of Mary Immaculate, Collon

The celebrations to mark the 150th Anniversary of the Church of Mary Immaculate, Collon on Thursday 24th October last, began with Mass celebrated by Most Reverend Eamon Martin D.D, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland.

The Church was packed to capacity for this Mass of Thanksgiving - Celebrating our Faith. Everyone involved in any way, big or small, in this Celebration Mass, can justly be very proud. A gigantic volunteering effort all round.

Following Mass, a very large attendance converged on Mattock Rangers Pavillion for refreshments, all prepared and served up by Community Volunteers.

Each and very aspect of Thursday nights Celebration was 'ar feabhas ar fad, comhghairdeas do gach dhuine a bhi pairteach ann.

During the refreshments, Archbishop Martin mingled with those in attendance, standing in for photographs when required. Among the clergy present on the night were locals, Fr. Matt Carpenter, Fr. Warren Collier, Fr. Malachy Flanagan, and Deacon Dermot Clarke. Thanks to the Priests of the Parish, Canon Peter Murphy PP VF, Fr. John O'Leary PE AP and Fr. Brian Slater CC for their massive input. A truly memorable and proud occasion for Collon Parish.

Scoil Naomh Feichin Extension

It was definitely needed, campaigned heavily for, thrust into the political arena, kicked about and eventually it happened. The work began in 2017 and in 2019 it was completed.

The official blessing and opening of the School extension took place on Monday October 21st with plenty of celebration not to mention excellent weather.

Principal Bryan Collins paid tribute to all involved, saying it was a really happy occasion and he praised the children in the School choir who gave a lovely performance on the day, describing them as fantastic.

Teacher Claire Mc Cluskey prepared a sketch in the form of a poem detailing the history of the school, interspersed with music and song which delighted all present.

Mr Collins also paid special tributes to the late Cllr Oliver Tully who had given so much to the School and former teacher, the late Mary Murray who is very fondly remembered by those she taught.

Auxiliary Bishop of Armagh Diocese Michael Router was on hand to perform the honours assisted by Fr. Paul Byrne P.P. Termonfeckin and in doing so wished all the children a very enjoyable time at the school. In response to a comment from Principal Collins regarding former blessings of the School by the late Cardinal O Fiach and Pope John Paul II, Bishop Router stated that the School did indeed have a Saintly Blessing.

Bishop Router also planted a Black Cherry Plum tree in the School Grounds to mark the occasion while the school children also planted a tree on the previous Friday.

Fr. Paul Byrne said it was a great vision for the School to have the extension and he complimented all the staff saying it was a celebration of wonderful facilities.

Two former Principals were present, Tony Williams and Eddie Rocks, former Deputy Principal Catherine Campbell, Principals from other local schools and there was also a special welcome for former Parish Priest Fr. Aidan Murphy. Also present were representatives of the Construction Company, the Architects, Clerk of Works, Board of Management, Parents Association and local politicians.

The School has an excellent playground with a rubber surface, part funded by parents and the Board of Management. It is described as very energy efficient using energy saving lights, natural gas and even harvests rainwater for the toilets. We are indeed fortunate to have a school with such excellent facilities and may all the children who pass through it in the course of their education have very fond memories of their time there.

Madden's Centra

Customers and visitors to Madden's Centra, Big Street, Termonfeckin have certainly noticed the changes made to the interior of the shop. Winners of €20 were Bernard Devine, Michael Mooney, Carmel O' Shea, Shane and Marie Meegan and Joan McGrane. The jackpot is now at €7,200 and is sponsored by Madden's Centra, Termonfeckin.

U13 Final

The U13 St. Fechins Boys team were in action last week in the Division 2A Final. They took on a Stabannon/ O'Connells combination team with the match played in Darver.
