Sincere Sympathy

The sincere sympathy of the Association and Community is extended to the families, relatives, neighbours and friends and all those who were bereaved by the passing, in her 101st year, of May Ward RIP, Main Street, Collon recently. You are in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time for you. The large attendances at May's wake and funeral obsequies was testament to her popularity, the esteem in which she was held, and the respect the people had for Collon's most senior resident at the time of her passing

Annual Summer Set Dance Ceili

The Annual Summer Set Dance Ceili takes place in Teach Raithneach on Thursday 30th May from 9 pm to 12 midnight. Music is by Triskell Ceili Band and Fear an Ti, John Mc Evoy will call the sets. You don't have to be a dancer to enjoy this event, you can come along and enjoy the Music and Dancing. The very best of refreshments will be served. This event will be followed by the Summer Ceilis in Mc Hugh's, Drogheda. More information on this later. Contact Gerard on 087 2729154 for details.

Gold secured again this year

Well done to all Community Members who had a hand in securing the Gold Medal for the District in Meath Co. Council's Anti Litter League again this year. To obtain a score of 96 out of 100, on both occasions when an inspection was carried out, is quite an achievement. Thanks to Community Members who continue to pick litter on a regular basis, your efforts have not gone unnoticed. Please keep up the good work over the Summer months.

The Big Hello!

Thanks to everyone from the Community and further afield who supported Broomfield and District's offering in what was the first National Community Weekend ever held, and hosted over the May Bank Holiday Weekend. This proved to be a positive initiative all across the country this year, and no doubt will be held again next year.

Leinster Champions

Congratulations to local girls Sorcha Gough and Olivia Gore who were members of the Meath minor football team that captured the Leinster crown when defeating Kildare 3-13 to 3-11 in Kinnegad on Bank Holiday Monday. Sorcha who is from Slane and plays with the Seneschalstown club came on as a second half substitute in the final. Olivia is from Rathkenny and her goal and a point in the decider proved crucial scores in a closely contested match.

Late Celine Dwyer

Sympathy is extended to the Dwyer family, formerly of Grangegeeth, following the death of Celine after an illness. Celine grew up in Grangegeeth where her late father Edward (Ned) was proprietor of the pub at the crossroads for many years.

Celine is survived by her mother May, brothers David and Eamonn, sister Mary, sisters-in-law Mary and Mairead, nephews and nieces and many friends. Her funeral Mass took place in St Patrick's Church Celbridge, followed by cremation at Newlands Cross Crematorium.

Knowth Lecture Series 2019

A number of lectures are taking place over the next number of weeks in the Knowth Lecture Series 2019 at Knowth Farm buildings which is beside the Knowth monument. The Rediscovery of a Passage Tomb Cemetery at Dowth Hall by Dr Clíodhna Ní Lionáin is this Wednesday, May 15th.

Then on Wednesday May 22nd a lecture entitled Passage Tomb People: A Molecular Approach to Monumental Questions by Dr Jessica Smyth takes place. Managing Irish Archaeology: Threats, Challenges and Discovery, The Work of the National Monuments Service by Michael McDonagh is the final lecture in the series on Wednesday, May 29th.

All lectures are at 8pm and admission is free but places and parking is limited. Advance booking only - email brunaboinne@opw.ie

Underage training

Fundamentals training for 4 - 6 year olds has started at Slane GFC and will continue every Wednesday evening from 7 - 7.40pm. Under-8 and under-10 training is every Wednesday from 7 - 8pm.

Golf Classic

Slane Community Centre will hold a Golf Classic on Friday, May 24th, at Ashbourne Golf Club. Tee times are available from 12.30 - 5pm and the cost per team of four is €400. This includes snack on the ninth hole and steak dinner in the clubhouse. Prizes for first and second placed teams as well as longest drive and nearest the pin. All funds raised will go towards the building of a community centre and sports hall in Slane. Further information can be had from maevecarbin@gmail.com

The First Communion takes place this Saturday, May 18th in St Patrick's Church, Slane. Blessing of the graves in Monknewstown, Dowth and Fennor is on Sunday, May 26th, and on Hill of Slane and St Erc's Cemetery on Sunday, June 2nd.

Coscán play Boyles

Lovers of Trad/Contemporary Folk music are in for a treat when the very popular Coscán play in Boyles of Slane on Friday, May 31st at 8.30pm. The four piece local group comprising of Gerry Doggett, David Nevin, John Shankey and Harry Long are celebrating 20 years on the road and as well as playing all over Ireland they have also performed extensively on the continent. Entry to their gig is free with no ticket required.

Summer Wedding Evening

Tankardstown House are hosting a Summer Wedding Evening on Wednesday, May 29th, from 6 - 8pm. Clonalvy Revival Committee

The Dunleer Golf Societies President's Day was held at the Killeen Castle Golf Course on Sunday 5th May 2019. President Gary Broughton led the charge in the event sponsored by Ray Moore, Hibernia Steel. The President's Prize was won by Mark Durnin with 38pts.
