Local soccer clubs merge to form new Drogheda United
1975: A NEW set up has been agreed for soccer in Drogheda.
League of Ireland club Drogheda and long-standing junior club Drogheda United have amalgamated and the club will be known as Drogheda United in the League of Ireland from next season.
The old Drogheda United club was founded in 1918 and gained strength under the guidance of organiser Paddy Reilly. The club owns its own ground at United Park and work will commence shortly on the development of the ground to bring it up to standard.
The new Drogheda Utd is expected to move to United Park some years hence when the redevelopment is completed.
D O'neill, secretary of Drogheda Utd, becomes a vice president of the new club and former United chairman Joseph Mullally gains a place on the new management committee.
' We hope to promote a completely new image for soccer in Drogheda after this amalgamation,' said Drogheda FC public relations officer Vincent Hoey.
