Droichead Youth group part of big celebration
The three Youth Theatres in Louth - Dundalk Youth Theatre, Droichead Youth Theatre, and M.A.D. Youth Theatre (Dundalk), recently came together for a celebration of Youth Theatre in Co. Louth.
The Residential Weekend was funded by CreateLouth, the arts service of Louth County Council, with support from the Arts Council. Similar gatherings have been organised for the past seven years, and this was the third residential weekend, building on previous successful residential weekends held in Newgrange Lodge, outside Drogheda, and the Adventure Centre in Carlingford
Youth theatres are a unique youth work practice, which engage young people as active participants in theatre. Rarely working from a script, youth theatres meet as a group, usually every week, and require commitment and an inquisitive mind on behalf of the members, all of whom are aged between 12 and 18 years old. The adult leaders are a key part of the success of youth theatres too.
"The three youth theatres in Louth are great examples of young people learning new skills, gaining fresh experiences, and at the same time, setting their own agendas within their own youth theatre", said Brian Harten, County Arts Officer.
