Soccer teams bring double glory to town

Tommy O'brien's

AMONGST the also ran for several seasons, 2012 has proved to have been a very successful season for the progressive Fermoy Soccer club as the club's senior and junior teams have both confounded all the critics and have propelled the club into the top echelons of both the Munster Senior and Junior Leagues for the coming season of 2012/13.

With the Junior team having already clinched its place in the Premier grade two weeks ago, they really put the icing on the cake by defeating Midleton who were the winners of the second section of Division One and so Fermoy were promoted as Division One winners and are already looking forward to the challenge that the higher graded teams will no doubt present to them.

The senior team finished their League campaign in Division One of the MSL in joint second place with both Carrigaline and Bandon.

This resulted in a play-off between all three during the past week. Bandon and Carrigaline were first to play and Bandon won this one, so it was all to play for when Fermoy met Bandon in midweek.

Thankfully Fermoy got the better of the West Cork side and so it was back to meet Carrigaline last weekend and by virtue of a 1-0 victory, Fermoy emerged as the side to join the League winners UCC at the top table for the coming season.

In congratulating both teams, their respective managers and coaches, they have brought great honour to the town and to their club, they will enjoy their hard earned successes over the coming days and no doubt will be planning ahead as they hope to be able to match up to higher levels of next season.

Now maybe they surely qualify for a Civic Reception?
