Castle Rovers hold out to reach U-21 semi-final
CASTLE Rovers (Liscarroll-milford) had a single point to spare over Mill Rovers (ShanballymoreCastletownroche) in the Under 21 B FC quarter final at Charleville on Saturday.
The winners dominated for long periods but in the end they were rather lucky to avoid extra-time. Over the hour Castle Rovers struck the crossbar on three occasions. In the first half Mill Rovers failed to score while the winners had their goal in the 8th minute by Ronan Lehane and they led 1-3 to 0- 0 at the break.
Mill Rovers improved greatly on the restart with early points by Darren Roche and Kevin Connolly. Brian O Reilly placed Eoin O'regan for a great point. Midway through the half Castle Rovers Darragh Hannigan placed Seamus Cronin for a well taken point. Mill Rovers were back in the hunt when Brian O'reilly soloed through from the 40 to kick a great goal.
In the 48th minute O'reilly and Robert Quirke worked well for Richard Hallihan to equalise. Both sides exchanged a point to be level 1-5 each by the 57th minute. Castle Rovers had their second goal when Niall O'callaghan's effort came back of the crossbar and Philip O'flynn was on hand to goal. Darragh Hannigan followed with a point.
As the game entered injury time Tadgh O'flynn with a free placed Conor O'brien for a vital point 2-7 to 1-5. Mill Rovers never gave up – Jamie Sheedy worked well for Eoin O'regan to kick a fine point and the latter was brought down in the square in the 3rd minute of injury time. O'regan goaled from the penalty. Time ran out and it was Castle Rovers who held out for a slender one point win and a semi final meeting with Buttevant.
