Millstreet to the fore in Taekwon Do finals

THE Irish Championships 2011 hosted in Cork's Neptune Stadium saw Millstreet Taekwon Do club members compete and enjoy significant success.

Under Master Don Dalton, Millstreet club is growing in stature with ongoing success delivered over the past decade.

Upwards of 30 members competed in the Black Belt and colour belt competitions.

From Rathmore, Padraig Desmond took gold in sparring, Jason Murphy gold in sparring, Ciara Murphy gold in patterns, Fergal O'connor, bronze in patterns, Darragh O'brien, bronze in sparring, Nikodem Swiczewski gold in sparring and silver in patterns.

Elsewhere Knocknagree's Conni Vaughan landed a gold medal, Ballydesmond's Denis Ring silver team sparring and bronze sparring, Katie Ring gold in patterns and Ellen Ring gold in sparring and gold in patterns. From Gneeveguilla Tynan Kerins collected a bronze medal in patterns and sparring, Paul O'leary gold in patterns and bronze in sparring, Ciara Brosnan bronze in sparring.

Boherbue black belt Triona O'sullivan continued her consistent run, meriting a silver in sparring and bronze in patterns. Kayla Murphy from Newmarket won silver in sparring and silver in patterns, Joshua O'sullivan from Ballydaly won a gold medal in sparring.

Millstreet representatives collected a rewarding run of success; Andrew O'regan bronze in patterns, Hannah O'regan gold in sparring and silver in patterns, Madison Murphy bronze in patterns, Cathal Leahy and Gerard O'hanlon also competed and Cathal won silver in patterns, Gerard was unlucky just to miss out in the medals but was very impressive on the day. Other competitors who were successful over the two days were Aoife Foley ( gold) team sparring, Liam Healy (gold), Brianna Gallagher Murphy (gold), Shannon Murphy, Coachford ( gold), and Peggy Mcsweeney, Ballyvourney (gold).

Millstreet members savoued the fruits of a consistest run during a long season, winning the Golden 4 Awards. This is achieved through winning a gold medal in four major competitions at Munster, Connaught, Leinster and the National Championships.

No less than five students from Millstreet Taekwon Do achieved the awards in 2011 and scheduled to be presented at the Munster Championships in Tralee during February. The successful Millstreet recipients are Conni Vaughan, Peggy Mcsweeney, Shannon Murphy, Katie and Ellen Ring.

Up to 2011, the Golden 4 Awards have never been achieved by two family members in the same year, so well done to the Ring sisters.
