Macroom bow out

County PIFC Round 3: Bantry Blues 1-15 Macroom 0-13

With a place in the quarter finals up for grab in Ballingeary last weekend there was no doubting that Macroom and Bantry Blues had plenty motivation to perform.

Both sides came into the tie with genuine title aspirations, however, as the saying goes there can only be one winner and last Saturday night that winner came from west Cork.

Macroom were highly fancied to take this win as they had already shown plenty to suggest they had what it took to squeeze through however when the dust settled few could argue that the Blues were not the worthy winners.

Macroom looked good for long periods but unfortunately for the men in green and white they couldn't register a goal which despite the five point margin, ultimately proved to be their downfall.

Bantry on the other hand did find a three pointer thanks to Ruairí Deane 10 minutes into the second period.

Deane's heroics brought the sides' level just when Macroom looked like they might have had enough to see this one out 1-07 to 0-10.

The goal changed everything about this game as a previously quite Bantry opened up scoring eight of the next 11 scores to win in a canter.

Shane O'Neill and Arthur Coakley impressed for the victors as the defensive pairing surged through what at times looked like an open Macroom defensive set.

For Macroom, no surprise that former Cork star Fintan Goold was on top of his game with Alan Quinn another to impress. Goold bagged a personal tally of 0-6 (three frees) but was instrumental in plenty Macroom attacks.

Things looked good for Macroom early on as they maintained the early advantage all the way to the break where they led by two 0-8 to 0-6.

A couple of early scores pushed the vanquished side even further ahead on the restart however Bantry hit back, first with Deane's goal and then with a raft of scores that Macroom just couldn't answer.

This will be a tough loss for Macroom to take after a good start to the campaign while for Bantry Blues, another day beckons and who knows how far they can go this time round - only time will tell.
