Historic first for Kiskeam
County SFC: Avondhu v Kiskeam, Sunday, April 16, Banteer 3.30pm
Kiskeam enter the big stage on Sunday and make their debut in the county senior football championship on a first round clash against Avondhu in Banteer.
Driven on by a fierce determination to succeed, Kiskeam enjoyed a stunning path to land outright victory in last season County Premier IFC culminating on victory over Fermoy.
Having enjoyed county Junior A victories from 1964 and 2002, Kiskeam's dream to play in senior grade some day has become a reality, a meteoric rise through the ranks over the past 15 years, a culmination for a squad obsessed by a determination to make amends for some inconsistent displays over recent years.
Apart from a blemish against Na Piarsaigh in round 1, Kiskeam turned their season around to account for Castletownbere and better formidable opponents in Mallow, a rematch against Na Piarsaigh, Beál Átha'n Ghaorthaidh and Fermoy to rubberstamp a ticket to senior ranks.
Howwever, Kiskeam face a tough debut assignment against Avondhu. Backed by a strong Fermoy contingent supported by key players from Mallow, Ballyclogh, Glanworth and Mitchelstown, Avondhu emerged one of the top sides from 2016, easily disposing of Duhallow en route and only a run of club championship games lessened their capabilities on a defeat to eventual champions Carbery Rangers.
With such a quality line up, Avondhu will wear the favourites tag yet Kiskeam will relish the opportunity on adding a new chapter to its illustrious history on performing in the premier grade in Cork football.
Some achievement for a big hearted club.
Looking ahead Kiskeam / Avondhu take on the victor/loser to the UCC v Dohenys / Aghada tussle in round 2.
