Goals prove vital as Glanworth ladies hold out to claim county title

GREAT rivals Glanworth and Fermoy produced a thrilling County Junior 'A' FC Ladies final at Castletownroche last week.

A large attendance were treated to a thrilling contest that produced eight goals. Fermoy looked impressive in the opening minutes when Saoirse Moore and Elisa De Luca had points. Glanworth replied through Amy Barrett and they levelled by Jennifer Baker in the 8th minute. Good work down the wing by Katie Coughlan led to a lead point for Glanworth.

Three goals in quick succession by Glanworth had a major bearing on the outcome. First in the 10th minute Christine Quirke and Aine Sheehan worked well for Jenny Sheehan who goaled. A minute later Megan and Una Blackburne set up a good attack involving Amy Barrett who placed the inrushing Katie Sheehan for a well taken goal.

Two minutes later Glanworth had another goal when Amy Barrett and Jennifer Baker worked well for Jenny Sheehan to score her second goal 3-3 to 0-2. One would have expected Glanworth to push on but it was Fermoy who made a great rally. Isobel Pyne Saoirse Moore and Elisa De Luca did very well. Fermoy had five points on the trot by the 22nd minute 3-3 to 0-7.

Glanworth's fourth goal came soon after when Aine Sheehan with a good solo run drew Jennifer Baker who kicked a great goal that opened up a comfortable lead 4-3 to 0-7. Fermoy's fifth goal came before the break when Jenny Sheehan gave a good cross to Amy Barrett who scored. Fermoy lost their keeper Ciara Howard with a finger injury in that goal effort.

Fermoy never gave up Elisa De Luca had a point. De Luca was denied a good goal scoring chance by a splendid save by Olivia Cahill. In injury time Andrea McGrath pout Elisa De Luca through for a fine goal that left seven points between the sides at the break 5-3 to 1-8.

Fermoy did very well early in the second half. A goal and two points the goal by De Luca had the lead down to two points 5-3 to 2-10. Glanworth took control they defended very well but found it hard to get more scores. They had a goal that eased their situation in the 47th minute by Jennifer Baker.

Fermoy created a number of scoring opportunities but were off target alot. Fermoy sub keeper Ann Brennan saved well from Jenny Sheehan as the ball broke to Elisa De Luca who kicked over. Jenny Sheehan followed with a point.

After the game Neilius Carroll Chairman Cork Ladies Football Board presented the cup to the winning captain Katie Sheehan while Declan Finn Tesco Homegrown presented Joette Gallagher with the 'player of the match' award.
