Fermoy claim Sean O Murchu Cup title
GLORY for Fermoy.
Fr O'Neill's 0-11
Following a highly competitive Sean O'Murchu Cup final between Fermoy and Fr O'Neill's at St Vincents GAA Grounds on Sunday the Avondhu side helped by a late goal by Padraigh De Roiste emerged close winners. Over the hour both teams enjoyed their moments. The opening stages saw Fr O'Neill's aided by the strong wind make an enterprising start as they took full advantage of the elements.
Declan Dalton opened their scoring with a pointed free and by the 10th minute the East Cork side surged forward at every given opportunity resulting in Mark O'Keeffe, Joe Mellerick, Rob Cullinane and Paudie McMahon reeling off some fine points as they raced into a 0-5 to no score lead. Fermoy quickly realised the challenge that lay ahead and steadied the ship when substitute David Geary recorded their opening score when he pointed from out near the sideline.
For the rest of this half the Fermoy defence tightened up considerably denying their opponents time and space on the ball while their midfield duo of Padraigh De Roiste and Jack Hutchings came more into proceedings. In the 14th minute a delivery by Peter Murphy was gathered by Paudie Shanahan who pointed under pressure from his marker and when Brian O'Sullivan following with another point two minutes later just two points separated the teams.
Just when Fermoy seemed like getting back on level terms Fr O'Neill's who struck a number of wides finally found their range. Declan Dalton and Joe Mellerick pointed a free apiece with Fermoy responding at the other end when a puckout by Conor Quinn found Paudie Shanahan who in turn placed Mark Flynn for a well taken score. In the run up to the break both teams added a point each, Declan Dalton put Fr O'Neill's double scores in front in the 25th minute but this score was cancelled out in injury time when Brian O'Sullivan was on target for the North Cork outfit and left just three points between the teams at the shortwhistle 0-8 to 0-5.
The second half was again much the same with exchanges very close for long periods. Fermoy had the aid of the wind in this half but at times during the third quarter they found it difficult to break down the Fr O'Neill's backline where Mark O'Keeffe excelled at centre back. Brian O'Sullivan and Declan Dalton traded a free each by the 41st minute before a period of pressure by Fermoy saw them come within the narrowest of margins at the end of the third quarter.
In the 42nd minute good work by David Geary and Brian O'Sullivan down the flank led to a delivery by O'Sullivan being fetched in the air by Paudie Shanahan who pointed under pressure while a minute later another free by Brian O'Sullivan following a foul on Mark Flynn left it at 0-9 to 0-8. Like the first half when Fermoy seemed to have the momentum, Fr O'Neill's with limited supply so far to their forward line rallied once again with Declan Dalton causing many problems up front and his two frees in quick succession by the 50th minute restored a three point advantage 0-11 to 0-8.
However this proved their last score with Fermoy showing the greater urgency in the last ten minutes with David Geary, Jack Hutchings, Padraigh De Roiste, Kieran Morrisson, Paudie Shanahan, Brian O'Sullivan, Alan O'Connor and Ronan O'Callaghan most effective. They got their fightback in motion when David Geary pointed from long range before Padraigh De Roiste was on hand to score the only goal of the game in the 55th minute in what proved to be the match winning score. Fr O'Neill's tried hard to get back on level terms but Fermoy were in the ascendancy at this juncture and late points by David Geary and Brian O'Sullivan set them on their way to close win.
Team captain Brian O'Sullivan accepted the Sean O'Murchu Cup from Brendan O'Driscoll, County Board Coaching Officer.
