Early goal blitz sets up win for Grange

County JBFC: Grange 3-10 Randal Óg 1-10

A scoring spree in the opening half set up Grange to overcome Randal Óg in an entertaining County Junior B Football Championship quarter-final at Ballyanley on Saturday.

Hard work and graft emerged all important attributes, Grange demonstrated alot of ambition and plenty of football know how to land a deserved victory. And from a cohesive performance, the winners plundered goals at vital times to confirm a reward for a slicker and more direct outfit that reaped a rich harvest to assume a 10 point interval advantage.

Early on, Randal Og adapted a defensive strategy as Grange stormed out of the blocks, working their way neatly up the field through the key efforts of John Magnier, Mark Timlin, Devon Roche and John Carmody.

With ample possession, Grange made the most of their enterprising workrate, David Keating placed Darragh Scott for a goal for a clear 1-3 to 0-0 grip inside 12 minutes. Having started in sluggish fashion, Randal Óg worked their way into the game, rewarded on points to Sam Kingston and Conor O'Neill to leave just two between the sides.

However, that spell of bright play fizzled out, Randal knocked back on their heels with a Grange flourish. After a Noel Barry point, the resultant kick out was intercepted by full forward Alan McNamara to net from close range.

Indeed, the tide had turned in favour of Grange, further disaster for Randal Óg, a McNamara effort saw the ball come off Randal captain Ian Crowley for the concession of an own goal and a 3-6 to 0-5 interval deficit.

Randal steadied to offer more belief and conviction on the restart through the commendable efforts of Crowley, Cian O'Neill, Shane Patterson and Conor O'Neill. Effective substitute Donncha Collins bagged a goal and follow up points from the latter O'Neill and Eoin O'Sullivan trimmed the leeway to three with 10 minutes remaining.

A rattled Grange displayed tremendous character to weather the storm and steadied the ship on the run in, late points from O'Neill, Sam Kingston and O'Sullivan rubber-stamped their place into the penultimate hurdle and a meeting against Kilbrin.
