Sharp-shooter Jerry O'Connor emerged the hero for Boherbue on bagging a decisive point during the later stages in extra-time to steer clear of Adrigole in a marvellous Bon Secours County Intermediate A Football Championship quarter-final at Ballingeary.

From a smashing encounter, end-to-end fare with the lead changing ends on a regular basis, the issue remained in the balance right throughout the 80 minutes before Boherbue took the verdict to set up an appealing semi-final meeting against Aghabullogue.

For rival supporters, this was an absorbing and entertaining contest, swinging a few different directions until Boherbue grabbed a hold of matters during the latter stage. By doing so, the 2021 County Junior A champions Boherbue continued with their unbeaten run and marginally shaded a game above the ordinary.

No surprise, the early exchanges were evenly contested, a lead point to Seán Shea for Adrigole cancelled out by Gerry O'Sullivan for the Duhallow side. Indeed things got better for Boherbue, O'Connor drove forward into the heart of the Adrigole defence to finish clinically to the net.

Boherbue had good cause to feel satisfied yet Adrigole were stung into action and responded strongly to dominate the second quarter. Getting a foothold on matters saw Gerard Shea, David Harrington and Seán O’Sullivan deliver points in a productive flourish that altered the scoreboard in favour of the peninsula men to hold a 0-7 to 1-3 advantage at half time.

However, Boherbue's play improved immeasurably on the restart, the good start required materialised, points recorded by Jerry and David O’Connor with Gerry O’Sullivan raising a further white flag for the lead by two. Adrigole responded positively to the challenge, right back in the hunt after a brilliant individual goal from Gerard Shea in the 43rd minute.

That made for a pulsating closing quarter, predictably, the concession of a goal provoked a Boherbue response highlighted by Jerry O'Connor points to jump two ahead entering the latter stages.

Still Adrigole refused to yield, showing plenty of spirit for David Harrington and Cian O’Shea to register points for a stalemate, 1-10 to each side by the end of the hour.

More of the same surfaced in extra time, points traded before Harrington curled over a beauty for Adrigole to edge ahead 1-13 to the 1-12 by the end of the initial spell.

The commitment and challenges for possession remained intense for the remaining 10 minutes but when it mattered, the ice cool O'Connor delivered the match winner for Boherbue.

For their efforts, Boherbue advance to a semi-final meeting against Aghabullogue on Saturday, October 1.
