U17 League - phase 2: Cork Constitution 22 Mitchelstown 7

On Saturday morning Mitchelstown U17 finally got their phase 2 League campaign under way against Cork Con in Mahon. Previous games versus Bantry and Dolphin were postponed due to unseasonal wet weather.

Cork Con started the stronger and the first 15 minutes were spent in the Mitchelstown half. Con showed their sharpness and crossed the Mitchelstown try line three times during their períod of dominance to build a commanding 15 point lead.

Finally woken up, Mitchelstown completely reversed the match and spent the rest of the first half in and around the Cork Con 22. Cork Con struggled to hold out Mitchelstown's attacks, and their prop was yellow carded for persistent infringements at rucks. Mitchelstown's perserverence paid off when Jack Norris scored a try, which was converted by John Landers.

Half-time score. Cork Con 15 Mitchelstown 7.

The second half started as the first half finished with Mitchelstown in the ascendancy. Backs and forwards interacted to move the ball freely in numerous attacks. Unfortunately for Mitchelstown, Cork Con repelled everything Mitchelstown threw at them, and when they broke out, Con scored the game's decisive try to win the match.

Mitchelstown played in their heavy duty Winter jerseys kindly supplied by the Junior team.

Squad: D. Barry, C. Peppard, C O'Brien, C. Noonan, J. Kennerly, J. Meaney, J Landers, D. Neau, A. Moloney, P. Waldron, F. Moran, B. Healy, J. Evans, J. Norris, J. Creagh, K. Baker, T. Willers, S. Purcell, D. Murphy.

The under 17 team will shortly be kitted out in their new reversible Lynx jerseys, kindly sponsored by Colours Paintstore, and The Firgrove Hotel. Thanks to the Tangney Family, and Moloney Brothers.

There was no other activity on the field this week, with the mini games being cancelled on Friday night, and the juniors taking a well earned break after their efforts. The under 15 team now awaits the cup.

In truth, Currabowen needs a rest and we need some drying soon.

On the social side, the launch of the White Collar Boxing was a great success, with SuperValue providing enough food and drink of all kinds to feed an army. It was great to see the number of boxers, male and female, who turned up for the event.

Tickets are selling well, and to book yours, please contact any committee member. The number of tables available is diminishing rapidly, so if you want to bring ten people or more, call sooner rather than later. It will be the only place to be in town on the 16th March, with two full days to recover from the experience. See elsewhere in the paper for details.
