Championship draws throw up some interesting pairings

LAST Monday evening the Muskerry G.A.A. meeting's agenda included the championship draws so there was an extra degree of interest for members with those draws producing some interesting pairings. The pairings are not known for the under-21 football championship as the C.C.C. could not make final decisions on the grading until the under 21 football league reaches a conclusion.

The Ross Oil Junior Football Championship will be the division's most competitive competition and even though clubs participating will have a second chance there is never a question of a lack of effort by any of the teams involved and the first round games should produce exciting fare.

One of the most exciting pairings is that involving title holders Kilmichael and Dripsey as the latter, who have made a brave effort to capture the blue riband of Muskerry football since their first participation in 2006, will be anxious for an early season boost to their football stock. Dripsey contested three finals without success and their ability to cope in an encounter with the reigning champions will very much determine their ability to continue as a formidable junior football side in Muskerry. Another attractive first round game is the contest between Aghinagh and Donoughmore, two enthusiastic sides who always endeavour to play in a positive fashion.

In Junior hurling the raging hot favourites for outright victory, Cloughduv, have a bye in the first round and all of the first round games are likely to be very even. Promoted Junior (B) hurling winners, Gleann Na Laoi, will face last season's beaten finalists in Donoughmore and the former, who finished last season impressively, will be determined to justify their position in the top grade junior hurling and Donoughmore may not always have things all their own way.

Kilmichael are another club endeavouring to establish themselves in the top grade of Muskerry hurling and they could secure a first round victory over Eire Og's second choice hurling squad.

The coming weekend will hopefully see a number of under-21 football league games being decided with the most attractive encounter likely to be the one arranged for Beal Athan Ghaorthaidh on Saturday at 4pm. The home side will play Kilmichael and these two teams have impressed in their outings to date. They have some excellent footballers in their ranks and players who have impressed for Kilmichael in recent outings are Daniel Twomey, Darragh Foley and Peter Kelleher. Those players will again make their presence felt on Saturday while Beal Athan Ghaorthaidh will hoping the Conchuir O Loinsigh, Nollaig O Laoire and Diarmuid Mac Thomais will continue to display the form that they produced in their recent outings.
