Ballyhooly 1-17
Charleville 0-12
Ballyhooly with a good showing in the second half ran out deserving winners over Charleville in the Hibernian Hotel JAHC at Buttevant on Saturday.
When these sides met at the quarter final stage last year the Rathluirc side caused a major upset. However, on Saturday Ballyhooly gained revenge to get this seasons campaign off to a winning start.
The opening half was keenly contested with very little separating the teams. During this half they were level on eight occasions with Barry Johnson (3), David Forde (2), Seán Buckley (2), Gearoid Roche (2), Sean Linehan (2), Danny O'Flynn (2), Killian Cagney, Dan Roche and Evan O'Connor on target for their respective sides as they were deadlocked at the interval at 0-8 apiece.
The opening stages of the second half were again much the same. Barry Johnson set up Sean Linehan for an early point only to be cancelled out at the other end when David Forde pointed from a tight angle.
They were also level at 0-10 each before the game began to open up.. In the 43rd minute Ballyhooly edged in front when Seán Linehan and Fionn Hess worked well to set up the impressive Dan Roche who pointed.
Charleville came close to a goal soon after when Sean Buckley's effort at goal was cleared off the line by a Ballyhooly defender. The clearance was picked up by Charleville's Daniel O'Connell who had the sides level for the 11th and last time at 0-11 each.
The remainder of the game saw the winners gain control in key sectors. Diarmuid Linehan gave them a lead they would not surrender before Sean Linehan set up Dan Roche for the games only goal in the 48th minute 1-12 to 0-11.
The winners were showing the greater urgency at this stage with Dan Roche in particular most effective in the full forward line.
They added five more points in the last 10 minutes to run out deserving winners by an eight-point margin.
