AVONDHU DIVISION 3 FL SEMI-FINAL
Aaron Hegarty’s second half goal was the difference as Araglin carved out a thyree-point win over a resolute Doneraile outfit in a keenly contested Cavanagh’s Fermoy Division 3 FL semi-final at Shanballymore on Sunday.
The opening stages saw Araglin start in a very positive manner with James Kearney (2) and Kealan Condon having points that moved them 0-3 to no score in front by the fifth minute.
Doneraile quickly got up to the required pace and were right back in the contest moments later when the hardworking Cathal Sweeney pointed two frees. In a low scoring contest Aaron Hegarty with a point moved the winners two clear before they missed a chance to stretch their lead in the 18th minute when Tom Kenneally and Ben Carey combined well to set up James Kearney whose effort at goal went narrowly over the crossbar for a point.
In the run up to the break Doneraile shaded matters. Cathal Sweeney added two more points from frees. In the 23rd minute Doneraile missed a goal scoring opportunity when Aaron Woods effort at goal was saved on the line by the Araglin keeper Tommy Feeney with the rebound falling to John Cronin who kicked over to force parity at 0-5 each.
Just before the break Araglin edged ahead again when James Kearney pointed a free as they held a slender advantage at the short whistle.
On the changeover Doneraile started brightly. In the 33rd minute Fionn Woods and Tony Flynn had their efforts at goal cleared off the Araglin goal line. The sides were level two minutes later when a ‘45’ by John Cronin set up Cathal Sweeney for a well taken point. Just when Doneraile seemed in a very good position it was Araglin that struck for 1-1 in the space of a minute that helped set them on their way to victory.
Sean Motherway edged them in front with a point after Keelan Condon and Paul Hynes combined well. The resultant kickout saw Araglin gain possession with Aaron Hegarty cutting through the Doneraile defence and scoring the only goal of the game 1-7 to 0-6.
Doneraile recovered well from this set back. Great work by Cian Donlon saw Kevin Smith kick over in the 40th minute with Bertie Kelleher setting up Cian Donlon for a long range point at the three quarter stage to close the margin to 1-7 to 0-8.
In Doneraile’s next attack John Cronin came very close to scoring a goal they so badly needed but his effort at goal struck the upright.
Just before the final whistle Araglin completed the scoring when James Kearney pointed a free and it was enough to see them hold on for a place in the league final against Buttevant.
